Whirlwind visit to MacLennan’s Glen

Bet you didn’t know Joël and I and the kiddies were in Antigonish for three days this time last week!? Squeezed in after a basket and back before prepping for Saturday market, we went antigonish 065to visit our great friends Carin and Scott – conveniently, also parents of Kamé’s beloved Mani Dude. They used to operate Valentino’s Organic Family Gardens & CSA and sold at the Cumberland market’s pilot project (where we met them) a few years back, but couldn’t resist the pull of the East coast (and the oh so gorgeous land with affordable price tags and family near by) so they moved into MacLennan’s Glen Farm and are breathing new life into that lovely acreage. Being on their farm feels a lot like being home – we were out checking the tomatoes antigonish 046for horn worms, encouraging the summer squash to grow more quickly, thinning lettuce for salads, washing out harvest bins, picking a long row of snow peas and harvesting wild blueberries. Maybe it’s because organic farming resembles itself, but even looking at their acre of mixed vegetables, felt like looking at ours. The rows of biodegradable plastic mulch, the short and challenging corn (darn crows!), the pretty pergola and the 1/2 hoop house beside the barn feel so familiar too. After being there, I am antigonish 115convinced that we NEED a pond now – for extra water, for fish, but mostly, for frog catching and rock throwing! And maybe a few extra hammocks because they are just so fun and inviting. We also need to see those lovely folks more often. We are grateful that Stephanie was willing to pick up the slack while we were away ;o) We’ll have to visit Nova Scotia in the Winter. Carin was telling us about their luge and sledding runs – speeding down the hills wearing head lamps and huge grins. Can’t wait!
