Wednesday farm update

I realized why I’ve been having such a hard time keeping a blog. Aside from the being busy excuse and our recent computer blip, I tend to do my little blurby update every week (twice a week actually) with the Wednesday and Sunday e-mail. So I think I’ll just stick to giving the list of what is in the basket and chit chat about the gardens on here.

We’re still behind with the weeding, but we had a big “corvée” this Saturday (and the part of Sunday when we weren’t harvesting) and we can now see the spinach, vegetable amarath, parsnip and escarole – which has FINALLY started to make heads. We also picked all the garlic — all 322 heads and change. Last night we brushed, braided and set them up to dry in the garage. But back to Saturday, after digging them out with the pitch fork we tilled the soil a bunch of times and reseeded some carrots and beets. In a few other lots we seeded some more kale, cress and arugula.

The new radishes are doing well and we harvested some of the rapini today — it looks gorgeous. The eggplants are a little pokey, about 1/4 of them have small fruits and the rest are still flowering. Hot pepper wise, we had trouble getting them to turn red last year (the few varieties that are) just for lack of heat and direct sun so we hope these ones will start soon…most of them are all various shades of green. And I tried a few, a bit of heat, but the chilis are nowhere near hot enough yet. And the pole beans are climbing, they really can reach 10 feet! Some of the pods are pretty big, but not ready yet… the yellow ones are still off green in colour.

We are still saddened by the blight ordeal, but hope you managed to eat and enjoy the green tomatoes too. I have a tasty green tomato cake I’ll be sending at the end of the tomato season when we tend to send the tomatoes that won’t have time to ripen before the first frost. We haven’t entered the abundance stage, after chatting with our farmer buddies, we kind of wonder if there will be massive surplus this year. But we hope you are having fun with this vegetable adventure and discovering some new favourites. Now I had better go see how the baskets are doing. ‘Till next week!
