Ode to a tree

Boy, this one hurt! The great maple, the tree that has defined the farm since Lloyd and June purchased the property in the late 70s, is gone. It was felled because the municipality is redigging ditches along the road. The new ditches are great, but to lose the maple, OUR maple! Catherine was in tears, Kamé wondered where the fairies would go to live…
On the left is a photo of June, circa 1979, after a day of gardening at the new homestead. She was sitting under the maple tree. This was before a house was built, before trees were planted, when the farm was pretty much open fields. So the maple tree was THE tree. Over the years, countless gatherings were held in its generous shade, and its colours were pure delight in the fall.
On the right is a sad pile of wood, and a great gaping hole (at least to our eyes) where the tree once stood.
Goodbye maple tree!
