
Here’s our new rooster, thanks to our friends Carine and Luc. We’re pretty sure he’s a Rhode Island Red, though perhaps not fully mature.
So far, we still have last year’s laying hens, although we’re down to 8 after a few run-ins with local wildlife. The idea with this rooster is to breed a new batch of layers, in time for Fall. I appreciate the Rhode Island Reds much more than the other breed – Brown Shaver Sex-Link. They’re ok for layers, but not very good foragers (and they have a certain propensity for getting eaten, which is highly disappointing!).
There’s also the other flock of chicks that’s coming a long nicely, from Kamé’s school. Here are a couple of pictures:
