Today was a lovely day to be harvesting vegetables! There was a bit of rain off and on, but it was blessedly cool all morning. The floppy green leaf lettuce in today’s baskets is called Black Seeded Simpson, and the pretty pink and green butterhead is Red Cross. There is also a small bunch of dandelion greens (I didn’t take a picture because I thought these were pretty obvious). Dandelion greens cans be chopped finely and added to a salad or used in a stir fry. The curly stems are garlic scapes, and they taste… like garlic! (Hint: use in moderation.) There is a small bunch of green onions, a handful of snowpeas, a bunch of red beets (remember to eat your greens!), and some of Joël’s sunflower sprouts and alfalfa/clover sprouts. These last two are packaged in compostable cellophane bags. One last note: the missing strawberries. We had a decent crop of berries last Thursday, but there was nothing harvestable for today’s baskets. I think it’s because we’ve had so little rain that the berries don’t fill out before ripening; they are tiny and the seeds are still clustered at the bottom. I can’t say whether or not there will be another crop of strawberries, but if so then Monday’s members get first dibs!
