Harvest notes August 17

August 2009 058Another topic oft-discussed here at the farm is what are suitable quantities of a given vegetable to include in the CSA baskets when there is an (over)abundance in production. For example, it was hotly debated today whether we should divide ALL of the summer squash  between the members. (As if we needed the extra heat!) Catherine argued that what the garden produces should be distributed, including the monster squash we hauled from the garden today. Catherine cooks a lot, and humongous zucchini don’t faze her… I myself, with limited time for cooking, would prefer a more modest share of summer squash. Joël leans the same way as Catherine, perhaps wisely, but since I did the final distribution today, the really big ones were left out of the baskets. After all, they can be recycled very suitably by feeding them to the young pigs.

There is nevertheless a lot of squash in today’s baskets, around 2 kg, so it would be a good time to have a look at the new Recipes page!

Also harvested today were Nevada lettuce, mesclun, garlic, yellow, purple and green slicing beans, radicchio (for salads but also to add to pasta dishes and risotttos), an assortment of cucumbers, a few carrots, tomatoes and onions, potatoes, and sprouts.

004Special thanks today to our garden assistants Monique and Catou. It was a long day, but it would have been much longer without your help! Many thanks as well to Robert, for all that time spent harvesting beans!
