… or should we say ambitions?
The garden is expanding this year to a full acre (yes, I know how big an acre is!) This is double its 2007 size, which already seemed pretty big to us then. But we adjust quickly…
The reason why we are expanding is twofold. One, because in our garden planning in previous years, we calculated too closely the space requirements for the number of shares, so that there wasn’t enough of a buffer to compensate for growing setbacks and difficulties (of which there are always many, as we are learning). Secondly, because we have worked out a really great ten-year rotation plan that accomodates the particular proportions of vegetables we need for the CSA baskets. No small feat, although it looks modest enough on paper.
But one of the things that helped move the crop rotation plan along was the adjustment to a full acre. The garden will be layed out in ten sections (ten year rotation, get it?), each comprised of twelve 100-foot beds. Big. Really big.
We’re hoping that with all this added space for growing things, we will be bringing you an ABUNDANCE (it’s our key phrase for this season) of great veggies.
