Busy busy weekend!

Although the season starts when we start seeding indoors in March, the first weekend we can till the soil and seed outside really makes us feel like it’s the beginning… and we start to feel like “real farmers”!

Isn’t it wonderful how the weather is cooperating now?! We were a little worried on Saturday that the ground would still be too wet (and in some cases too frozen) to fire up the rotter tiller and really get our hands dirty. But all went well and Jean-Pierre and Joël spent many an hour alternating turns at tilling the soil.

This was after Nico had a go at tuning up all the tractor, tiller and mower (horray for oil changes and clean filters!) on Friday and after our morning group meeting about general priorities and the nitty gritty of what goes where. Jean-Pierre submersed himself in digging his famous ditches — he is a master at the underrated art of drainage! Kamé and I cleaned out the chicken’s summer coop to ready it for the next brood. Joël then moved it to its new location and all that is left is putting up a little fence to keep the dear chickens out of the tomato patch. Almost turned the compost, but it doesn’t seem to be quite ready yet. We also checked in with our buzzing bees and the four hives are doing very well — lots of pollen, honey, larvae and activity in there!

Right before heading in for a beer in the gazebo, we seeded some peas and snow peas in one of the newly tilled plots while Kamé ate her muffin and listened to the geese overhead.

Spring is really really here and we’re so ready for her! We had a lovely Earth Day and hope you did too. It’s been one of those days where we’re just so happy to be alive.
