Blue moon

Well, it’s now official, we are full. All 32 CSA shares have been sold. And we are elbow deep in all the little tasks that need to be done… the list is long! The main focus is tilling all the lots (and the new 2 acres) sometimes 2 or 3 times to break up the soil granules. And we’ve started seeding outside (and transplanting the onion family) but we’re a little nervous.

You see normally the risk of frost is a thing of the past after the full moon of May… but this year, there are two moons in May, one that was quite visible last night and the other on the 31st… so it’s risky business putting a lot in the soil now because there may be evening frost that would damage the plants… but on the flip side, if we wait until end of May to put all the babies into the garden, it makes for a late season — which doesn’t really work in out climate because of frost risk in October and sometimes earlier. Mother Nature sure knows how to keep us gardners on our toes! ;o)

And a little side note for non-members who may be reading this entry: if you send us an e-mail with your contact info for next year, we will gladly give you a call/send you an e-mail in the late winter when we tend to start our advertising for the 2008 growing season. You can visit us, and our good friends from Valentino’s Organic Family Gardens & CSA, at the Cumberland Farmers Market every Saturday (8 am to 1 pm) beginning June 23rd at the Cumberland Arena.
