Well, more like a putt putt putt beginning! The first seed trays were sown this past weekend: one and a bit of celeriac (celery root), with the second filled in with a bit of parsley and a few flower varieties. Two trays doesn’t sound like a lot, but they each hold 356 little cubes of soil that will be transplanted to larger soil blocks as the seedlings grow.
Celeriac is one of my favourite vegetables (I have a lot of favourites), but they take an amazingly long time to grow. The variety that we’ve seeded is called Mars, and it’s said to mature in 120 days. That’s 120 days from when it’s transplanted out mid-May. So what we have just seeded we expect to harvest on September 13! Gardening teaches patience…
