And if you can figure out that reference, I’ll give you a free bag of coffee!
Excellent harvest day today – no blazing sun, no rain, not too many bugs, and a lot of veggies. Started off the day with the lettuce, the Nevada Summer Crisp (yes, it finally decided to join the party after all, and grew to a decent size). Fresh garlic still, although we really need to get the rest of the garlic out to dry. The potatoes this week are the Banana fingerlings. For carrots, we cleared out all the first rows in the big garden. They are stunted because of the hardpan just under a couple of inches of clay, and the copious amounts of rain. Fear not, dear friends, we still have several rows in different areas that are faring better. The onions harvested are our standard fare these last few years, the Copra. Nice and tasty.
There’s a good sized bunch of tomatoes in the baskets as well – just over a pound of mixed tomatoes. There’s a bit of basil in the baskets, which is great with tomatoes. We’ll try to put a photo guide to the different tomato varieties we have growing – I’ll add that to the long to-do list!
The peppers are a nice surprise. I have to admit, look at that row of scraggly twigs, I didn’t expect to get enough to distribute in the baskets. We put a couple of Jalapeños in there at random for some lucky folks.
Anybody notice the lack of corn? Our corn seems to be suffering from Acute Raccoonitis. I keep testing for readiness, but our furry friend beat us to it. You wouldn’t think a raccoon could eat much corn, right? Ha! Like a bull in a china shop. Corn ears all over the place, plants knocked over, you name it. Last year we had an electric fence around the corn, but I think we may be too late for that now.
Lots of beans in the baskets, as well as cucumbers and summer squash/zucchini. The summer squash are starting to slow down a bit, though.
After getting the baskets ready, we still had a little time to rototill some beds in the garden and transplant a few trays of lettuce. It’s been a bad season for rototilling – much too wet. So it’s great to be able to clean up the green manure/weedy beds.
