August 27th harvest

Well I can’t take much credit for the harvest today – I was too busy recovering from that back pain. Still, that can’t stop me from rambling about the garden.

It’s getting a bit chilly in the evenings, as I’m sure you’ve noticed… We know Fall is coming when Stephanie is harvesting in her winter coat. :)

In your baskets today – the squash are still there, but much less plentiful (have you had too much yet?). The winter squash are doing quite well. I’m not sure how much volume we’ll muster, but if past years are an indication, we should have some tasty squash ready in a few weeks. The cucumbers you’re all familiar with by now. Those yellow (with some white stripes) melons in there are called Sun Jewel.

Still some fresh garlic, but we harvested the whole lot now. You will probably be getting fresh garlic for another week, and then hopefully a bit of the cured garlic a couple of weeks beyond that. Unfortunately, we won’t have enough for a full garland of dried garlic for everyone – the harvest is not as bountiful as we had hoped.

The yellow and purple beans are winding down, but we sent along some green ones and some of the slicing (pole) beans (green and yellow). Let’s see… lettuce (Nevada Summer Crisp), Radicchio, Chiogga beets, green onions, tomatoes. Some green peppers. There are bunches of sage and of lemonbalm. And the Swiss chard is Bright Lights and Fordhook Giant. I’ll let you figure out which is which!
