We were hoping for some real summer heat to help the sun-loving vegetables along, and today we sure got a dose! Although we started early, the heat that built through the morning made the work a little more challenging. Joël was suffering so much that I suggested he take a dip in the pool after lunch, and he did come back to work with renewed energy after that.
We harvested lettuce, green onions, garlic, summer squash, beans, swiss chard, potatoes, kohlrabi, white beets, cucumbers, mint, sunflower sprouts, and we scrounged up a few decent little carrots.
Although there is quite a bit of summer squash in today’s baskets, the plants are on the decline, so please do enjoy them while you can. There are either yellow or purple beans, or green slicing beans, in the baskets. The purple beans will turn green when they are cooked. The swiss chard is the multicoloured Bright Lights, and the white beets are called Albina Vereduna. Joël and Catherine really wanted to include a bit of mint today so that you could try the potatoes boiled with sour cream and a bit of chopped mint — just wonderful!
