About Us

Welcome to Covenant Farm!

Our family farm is located in Clarence Creek, Ontario, about 45 minutes east of Ottawa. Four generations work here together — mainly producing vegetables for our Community-Supported Agriculture project, but also keeping honeybees, roasting fair-trade coffee, concocting tasty and healthy camping meals, and making lovely soaps — with the goal of developing a farm operation that is sustainable for the environment, for our members, and for ourselves.

We derive great satisfaction from producing healthy food and handcrafting wholesome products. We are all great lovers of food, of our amazing planet, and of learning. Each passing season sees us embracing new challenges — there is no shortage of projects, new varieties to grow, outlandish recipes to test, and wonderful people to meet. Operating a small family farm really is a life-long learning experience!

We are nature enthusiasts, hopeless (no, hopeful) dreamers and lovers of scrumptious food — and we want to share these loves with everyone! Individually we have our quirks and inspirations, and these are woven together to make this farm a hubbub of activity and positive energy.

Our family farm is run by:

Stephanie, the one who got the ball rolling. With her constant stream of ideas and projects, she keeps all of us incredibly busy and inspired.

Both Stephanie and her husband Jean-Pierre come from very large, big-hearted families, which have strongly influenced how they live day-to-day. Jean-Pierre is the most thinking personality here at the farm — he will research, measure, plan, and budget before jumping into a project. (The rest of us are not as patient, leaning more towards the “grab a hammer” approach!) Jean-Pierre is a beekeeper, digger of ditches, and pulley-maker extraordinaire.

Joël is a true farm geek, always torn between the call of farming and that of new technologies. Although a rural and international development graduate, many of his jobs have been more technical in nature. Joël is also a burgeoning blacksmith and a part-time coffee roaster. Ask him about parsnips or espresso, and his face will light up!

Joël and Catherine were wed in 2003, at a May Day handfasting ceremony under the oak tree, and have felt the urge to plant farm roots ever since. Catherine has a fast-developing repertoire of recipes for our farm produce, and a creative energy looking for release. She is happy baking wonderful desserts for sale at the market while lovingly attending to their daughter Kamé and son Mateo.

Nicolas is Stephanie and Jean-Pierre’s youngest son. Nicolas loves tractors. He is currently studying to be a heavy equipment technician, which he believes will make a great career while allowing him to also pursue farming!

Kamé is a 5-year-old bundle of curiosity with a penchant for fresh asparagus, raspberries, beans, and especially ground cherries. She loves to wander through the garden, randomly taking bites out of anything in her path, and especially to “aider”, which is more like a declaration that she wants to be involved… Nonetheless, the farm seems to appreciate her energy, and goodness! Does she love it here! Our dynamite little girl keeps us all on our toes, and in awe, and feeling youthfully exuberant… most days.

June and Lloyd (Stephanie’s parents) have been married for over 60 years. Their first home was a chicken coop built in Lloyd’s parents’ back yard — no, really, zoning laws must have been different back then! June is a renowned cook who keeps many a belly happily full. She boasts a green thumb and a mighty attractive flower bed. Lloyd is a quiet handyman who is always willing to help clean and bundle the potatoes, beets and carrots.

The farm property is now in the very capable hands of Jackie Pelot. She is a small animal emergency veterinarian with an exciting career in Mississauga, but the farm has always been her home. Jackie shares the vision of a sustainable family farm that may some day become a model for food production and preserving. We welcome Jackie’s enthusiasm and clear-headedness (not to mention hard-headedness), and are delighted to have her as part of the team.

It really is lovely to have so many generations working the soil and sharing hope for the future.

Ponies Tarka and Misty are our trusted manure producers. The garden would not be what it is without their help!

There are also 15 chickens who make the farm their home. We have not named them, as truly, we cannot tell them apart. They keep us well stocked in eggs and entertainment. The bees (whom we haven’t named either, for obvious reasons) do all of the pollination work, and share their honey with us too, bless them!

Our other helpers are family and friends: Eric, Rob, Peggy and Chris, Aaron, Philippe, the extended Béland family, Richard, Shelby, Tara & Steve, and Carin & Scott, who always give a hand when they come by for a visit. You can join us, too!
