A thank you to friends and an invitation to shareholders

Well, a great big thank you to our amazing friends! With Eric, Rob and Camille’s able assistance, we’ve been able to stay on top of various farm projects and mostly settle into our new abode.

The May long weekend is often a hectic one over here (even before the CSA project) because it’s the yearly “corvée” get together for the Béland family — with roughly 35 people to feed and organize. The horses now have a new fence (with well planted cedar posts that should not budge come spring thaw), the winter chicken coop is cleaned out and the chickens moved into their “summer cottage”, the greenhouse flats are gradually being transplanted into the gardens, my flower garden is seeded and sprouting, AND the most triumphant accomplishment was definitely planting 5 rows (120 feet ones) of potatoes — mighty pretty ones might I add, the Blue Russians are simply gorgeous! This year we’ve decided to try a new planting method which consists of forking the soil, then passing the tiller, then placing soaked sheets of newspaper on the ground, cutting the potatoes and placing them on the wet paper then covering it all up with 2 feet of partially composted hay and then drenching the whole thing and waiting for the sprouts to peek out. Then comes the uber fun job of potato bug removal, but I’ll save that for another entry. ;o)
I’ve been urging Joel to write a little blurb in here (to give his view of what’s growing in the gardens and his rant about frost) but he’s not often indoors this time of the year, and when he is I tend to have a long list of things for him to do. But I think rain is coming, which means he’ll be able to share a few thoughts…
Between emptying boxes and tending to the gardens, we’re not being as punctual as we would like with the blog, but all the same, we wanted to extend a heartfelt invitation to all of you to come either picnic, transplant, hoe or just meet us this Sunday (May 27th) or the following Saturday (June 2nd). As extra incentive, we have asparagus and rhubarb available for you if you can make it out to the farm! Hope all of you are well on this very very warm day!
