I am very sad to report that a fisher (we presume, given the carnage) made a sizeable dent in the flock of chicks. Of the 46, a stressed out 7 seem to have made it by hiding behind the cardboard insert. I guess the industry term for that is a really high mortality rate, right? I’m all for wild animals feeding themselves and their young, but I have an issue with fishers and their killing-without-eating behaviour. Producing food in one’s backyard has its share of ups and downs, and that’s definitely a big downer.
Still, the Lucky Seven are a hopeful mix – one duckling, two Rhode Island Red chicks and four meat birds – residing in the newly revamped maximum security coop. Does anybody have any good fisher-meat recipes? ;o)

Three empty sprung traps, one odorific skunk and an incredibly innocent looking raccoon later, we have decided to put the trap away for a while.
